Hospice care for the terminally ill focuses first on pain management and symptom control. Pain is controllable and uncomfortable symptoms can be managed. Most hospice care is done in the patient's own home with the patient and family as the unit of the care. A variety of inpatient settings are also available. Fundamental to hospice care is the philosophy that each human life has value. The final stages of life can be times of rewarding emotional and spiritual growth. The hospice interdisciplinary team supports this growth in the context of the patient and family's own community. Hospice care can guide the patient toward a greater sense of personal meaning and satisfaction. The result of hospice care is a comfortable and peaceful death.
